There is this phrase, “winning at life,” that people use nowadays. Maybe you’ve heard someone say it or they used it as a hashtag in their social media posts when they completed a project or perfectly juggled a full day of work and their kids’ activities.
While the phrase gives the appearance that someone “has everything together,” what does Scripture say “winning at life” really looks like? 1 John 5 gives us a very appropriate lesson on how to stand firm, no matter our season of life:
“This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out His commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep His commands. And His commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.”
~ 1 John 5 : 2-5
At the time that 1 John was written, believers were being tested. People were challenging if Jesus was real. That can happen to us, too, when we go through
a crisis or face seasons of waiting. We might find ourselves asking: “Are you real, Jesus?”
Reality check – “winning at life” doesn’t mean we won’t face trials! Winning at life, or as John says, “overcoming the world,” is making Jesus our foundation in order to stand strong despite our circumstances.
In other words, our belief in Jesus should dictate our response to life. We can have joy and hope, but we can also rest in the fact that God holds us and sees us in our trials.
We are all currently in a similar season because of the coronavirus pandemic. More than likely, we all are struggling or questioning life in some way – our income, the health of our families, feeling isolated, or fighting anxiety at the thought of school starting back.
But here is the victory: Jesus IS real, and He is completely involved in your life wherever you are right now! Do you believe that? His love for you can change every aspect of your life.
Wrap yourself – like a blanket – in the truth that Jesus loves you and sees you today. Be completely immersed in him. Give everything about yourself – your beliefs, attitudes, decisions –to align and be obedient to what God says. When you do, His love and wisdom will give you strength and peace.
If you want to find victory and “win” today in whatever your circumstances may be, then make Jesus your foundation!
